The US Navy operated two installations in Bermuda. Naval Air Station Bermuda was located on St. Davids Island, and a bit of the land was engineered to build an airstrip, so that a portion of Castle Harbour was filled in. Before this project was completed, the only way to get to the island was by a seaplane making a water-landing. While the base was in operation, the airstrip was shared with the Bermudian Airport. So, sub-hunting P-3’s and fighter jets often shared a runway with passenger airliners. The other base, The Naval Annex, was on the other end of the island chain, in Sandy’s Parish. Basically, the Annex was meant for docking naval vessels. Since the island was so small, high school kids from the Annex had to take the bus to the Air Station, where Roger B. Chaffee high school was located.
