I’m not sure how much the street has changed since the 1980’s.  My memories of the place are of it being a lot bigger.  They often had market days too, where tables lined both sides of the street, and not to mention the area near the bus station, which is behind where the person who took this picture was standing.   As for the market tables, you could literally buy a variety of stuff there, from winter clothing to jewery, to soccer cleats and soccer balls.  Once, when I went back during the 1990’s, I scored a Bad Brains vinyl 12 inch.  Still, during the 1980’s, a lot of punks hung out here, especially in the area behind the arches on the left.  I still have memories of being a kid and a hunchbacked, toothless bag lady staring at me from between those columns.
