I’ve never been there, but my father has. There’s a lot more to Guantanamo Bay then the illegal (international law wise) detention camp. The base has a long history, as well as other objectives. There’s DOD schooling, partly because there’s no other place to send the students. There’s no “local economy” either, due to cold war styled relations with the communist government either. So, personnel stationed there have to stay on the base. That’s why, at least for high school students, most people hate being there. As for DODDS employees, getting PCS orders and relocating there is usually seen as a punishment. The base, however, has it own website, complete with pages on the history of the base.
